The Healing Power of Good Camp FriendsMarch 4, 2013
I love how our Camp family comes together when a friend is in need. It is one of the hallmarks of the Kenwood & Evergreen community.
This weekend was the 30th birthday party for a much-loved former camper and counselor named Abby. Abby’s had a pretty rough year, first getting diagnosed with a serious illness just days after her honeymoon, and then losing her house to Hurricane Sandy. But with her milestone birthday approaching Abby’s incredible wife Rachel put together a fabulous party, both to remind Abby of how much she is loved in this world, and to raise much needed funds to help pay for her looming medical bills.
The party was just like Abby – fun and full of positive vibes, centered on her passion for Yoga. And a whole lot of Camp people were there to celebrate. Many of Abby’s best friends from her years as a camper and counselor were in attendance, as were many on the Camp leadership team.
Scott likes to say that our community is so strong that “we can have Camp in a parking lot”. I’ve always loved that saying and its idea that the people make us Kenwood & Evergreen, not the buildings or the location. I had the pleasure of seeing his words come true on Sunday at Abby’s party as I watched grown women with professional careers and families revert back to being 15-year old girls in a matter of minutes. Throughout breakfast they sat on the floor of Abby’s hotel room rehashing favorite silly Camp stories while they braided her hair and did her nails. There was giggling and goofiness and just so much fun being together. During the party our alumni serenaded Abby with Camp songs and cheers and enveloped her with hugs and kisses. It was an incredible day of the sort of love and friendship that is hard to find outside of the relationships that you forge during your summers at Camp.
Happy 30th Birthday Abby, and thanks to everyone in the Camp community who helped make yesterday such a special event. Nothing feels quite like the healing power of being with good Camp friends. Please click here if you’d like to learn more about Orange For Abby, in support of our friend.
