Thank you to a friend in Mexico during #campcounselorappreciationweekJanuary 24, 2018
Last weekend Catherine & I travelled exactly 3618km from Sharon MA to Puebla Mexico on a quest to hire more amazing Kenwood & Evergreen summer employees. During our time in Mexico we met dozens of potential new recruits, and were also joined by our camp friend Salvador Marin. Salvador, or “Chava” as he is known to his campers and fellow counselors, has spent 4 summers at our sleep away camp in New Hampshire. First, he worked as a member of our Kitchen Support Staff team, then became the head of our Cooking activity area, and last summer was a bunk counselor in our youngest age group.
Salvador was incredibly helpful as both our guide and the third member of our K&E recruitment team while we were in Mexico. He was a fabulous resource for every applicant, sharing his first hand experience as a kitchen assistant, activity area head and a general counselor! I remember what it was like when I was hired to work at Camp during an international job fair, and I can imagine how helpful and reassuring it was to our newest team members to be able to ask Salvador what it’s really like to spend a summer working at our sleepaway camp in the United States.
Here at Kenwood and Evergreen we talk a lot about the “Camp community” and how it transcends time and geography. It’s often said that no matter where you are in the world there are K&E Camp friends who care about you and will be excited to welcome you in, no matter how long its been since you’ve seen them. This trip really demonstrated how true this is. In our limited 4 hours worth of exploring time we met Salvador’s family, toured his village of Cholula and visited the town’s famous pyramids. We even found time to explore its local markets and try some of its incredible cuisine. And by that I mean we stopped at every single market stall and bought a sample of everything that was offered (even if I did have to be courteous and pretend to enjoy some of it). It was an amazing cultural experience and one that would not have been possible without the help and generosity of our camp friend Salvador.
Without him I can confidently say we would not have experienced any of the real Mexico. Salvador is a great friend, helpful team member and tour guide seamlessly rolled into one. His selflessness and willingness to go out of his way to enhance our experience has left a lasting impression on us both. As this is #campcounselorappreciationweek the timing could not have been more perfect!
Salvador, Catherine and I want to thank you so much for making an incredible trip even more special. You helped us welcome into our Camp community more than a dozen new members and made us feel like honored guests in your country.
