Our summer camp in NH searches the world for the best camp counselorsJanuary 21, 2016
Every January our summer camp in NH’s program director David Walsh travels all over the world attending university jobs fairs in search of the very best new camp counselors and support staff to work at our overnight summer camp in NH. This year, as interns, Josh and I were lucky enough to join him for the UK leg of the trip and assist with this process.
As Jason mentioned in yesterday’s blog, this is the time of year when there is an official camp reunion in England for any past or present staff who can attend. This year it was held in Leeds (where many of our camp counselors live). Around 30 staff members (from the UK and US) spanning the past 10 summers gathered for a fun night reliving our favorite camp memories and hanging out. It’s safe to say a good time was had by all!
The first jobs fair of the trip took place the following day. We found ourselves in a large conference room with 20-30 camp directors present, all eager to meet and get to know the hundreds of applicants. The doors finally opened and the potential new counselors began flooding in. As is always the case, the line of people waiting for an interview with Kenwood and Evergreen became the largest in the room. After talking to some of the hopefuls, it became clear that they had done their research by going through our website thoroughly. So many bright and talented young coaches, teachers and potential counselors were impressed enough by what they have seen to wait for hours to interview with David, hoping to have the opportunity to secure a job at our brother-sister summer camp in New Hampshire.
Half way through the day we were visited by a bunch of the current staff who attended the reunion the night before. Those waiting in line saw us all laughing and joking, which no doubt reinforced their decision to seek us out in search of a fun filled amazing summer experience. We were also assisted by 3 Evergreen unit leaders in finding the right candidates. Each of us took time talking to the applicants, explaining Kenwood and Evergreen’s emphasis on teaching 21st century skills, learning about their strengths and what they could offer.
With many of our staff returning year after year, David has the luxury of hiring only the most qualified, best fitting, quality staff. Those who did get accepted were clearly excited about their summer!

We will update you all on the second half of the trip next week, when we attend another university jobs fair in Manchester, England, and then David heads to Puebla in Mexico!
