Our Incredible, Amazing Summer 2012 Camp Reunion in New Jersey!February 4, 2013
This past weekend about 250 members of our Camp Community got together for our annual reunion in NJ. Campers, Parents and Staff from the Tri-State Area, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts braved the cold and snow to spend a few hours with their camp friends at a NY Sports Club. We played basketball, soccer and hockey, went swimming, ate pizza, and just enjoyed our time together. Ours is a community that really enjoys being with one another.
A lot goes into making events like this happen. Head Counselor Walshy spent countless hours before arranging for food and drinks, tables and coat racks, and coordinating transportation and housing for counselors. During the afternoon before the event my wife Deena baked GF pizzas for our campers, parents and staff who eat a gluten free diet (along with one diary free and one tomato sauce free pizza for two other members of our community with other food intolerances).
At 6pm we had about two-dozen Camp Staff on hand to set up the event, which included wrangling with our 16-foot tall inflatable movie screen and putting together our portable PA system for showing our video yearbook. The Yearbook is a compilation of every just about every big moment of the past summer, including opening and closing days, staff training, the hollowpallooza music festival, sports tournaments, theatrical events, life in bunks, breakouts, and the general fun and silliness of the summer. This year our video yearbook was more than 45 minutes long (it was a really good summer), so we showed a ten-minute trailer of it at the Reunion, and then sent a full copy home with everyone who had attended the party. As everyone arrived there was excitement all around. Campers were hugging and screaming and jumping up and down, thrilled to see so many people that they had missed since August. At 7pm we gathered everyone into the main area of the gymnasium so that Scott could say a quick hello and share some exciting news about new program and facility changes at Camp (more on that in a future blog posting). After watching the Yearbook trailer we split everyone into the age groups that they had been in this past summer, and the party really started. Our youngest campers were holding hands and leaping into the pool while some of our older kids gathered to chill in the enormous hot tub. Lots of girls were shooting hoops while others sat together and giggled, and large groups of boys played hockey and indoor soccer. About 80 parents stayed for the entire party, and Scott, Deena, and I loved having the chance to catching up with them.
By 8pm everyone had a slice of pizza in their hand and a drink in the other, and we all sat around the tables together. It felt a lot like our weekly picnic lunch during the summer, as friends of different ages sat enjoying each other’s company. Even thinking about it two days later brings a smile to my face.
And as quickly as it started, the party was over. By 9pm 250 children and adults stood in the entranceway to the building, hugging and making plans for the next time we were all together. Dozens of campers departed for sleepovers, while the counselors joined the Camp Administration for a thank you dinner at a local restaurant. We really can’t get enough of each other!
With our final Camp Reunion of the year concluded, we will now have to wait until June to see so many members of our community together again. But we do have two more exciting events coming up this Spring. In May we have two different regional parties just for our New Campers and their families.
Boston Area New Camper Party – Sunday, May 5, 2013 – Boston Rock Gym, Woburn, MA – 11am – 1pm
Tri-State Area New Camper Party – Sunday, May 19, 2013 – NJ Rock Gym, Fairfield, NJ – 11am – 1pm
We will be sending out save the date information for these gatherings in the next few days. And check your mailbox in about two weeks for our Summer 2013 CLOZ Catalog and Packing List. Our Summer 2013 Parent Handbook is currently in its final review stage, and we should be emailing that to all families by the end of February.
Lastly, we want to remain connected to our Camp families throughout the year, and have found that social media is one great way to do it. If you have not yet “liked” the Official Kenwood & Evergreen Facebook Page please consider doing so today. We post new Camp-related content almost every day, and we’d love to include you in our conversations.
We also have posted almost 200 videos on our CampKandE Youtube channel, and invite you to view our camper and staff-made content.
Thanks to everyone in our community who made our Reunion weekend in NJ such a success. We loved see you all!
