Helping New Campers Prepare for the Summer
With only 44 days until the start of the summer of 2014 we are busy helping our newest campers prepare for their first overnight camp experience. On Sunday, May 4th we hosted a New Camper Party at the Boston Rock Gym in Woburn, MA. All of our new campers in the MA, NH and RI were in attendance, along with one enthusiastic camper who made the drive with his parents from NY just to meet his new camp friends!
Our amazing counselors were on hand to help make sure that everyone made new friends, had their many questions about the camp experience answered, and had a great time rock climbing. Afterwards, we all sat together to enjoy some lunch. As it always is at our summer camp, everything was peanut and tree nut free, and we also had gluten free alternatives on hand. While the kids were climbing and having fun the parents gathered with Scott and Phyllis for their own social gathering. As a group they discussed everything from first-time family nervousness to how we celebrate summertime birthdays. Parents were introduced to moms and dads of the other campers in their child’s age group, and lots of contact information was exchanged. We want every member of each family to be an included, valued part of this overnight camp experience!
This Sunday, May 18th, the Camp office will move south to New Jersey for the NY, NJ, CT and PA-area New Camper Party. Our counselors, head counselors and directors we will be on hand to help our new campers prepare for their first summers away from home. We know that even the most excited new camper is also at least a tad nervous about this adventure, and this event is a great way to bolster their confidence. Upon arrival we will introduce our campers to the other people in their age group, and our counselors will run ice breaker games to help them learn about each other and what they have in common. Our counselors will also discuss their memories from their first summer at Kenwood and Evergreen, share what made them nervous, and identify what they did to overcome these obstacles. These conversations model for new campers that our counselors are kind, approachable, and eminently empathetic — and demonstrate to our campers that their counselors can be trusted allies during the summer away from home. These moments will go a long way towards helping our new campers prepare for the summer!
Each year at every new camper party our kids (and parents, too!) arrive a bit unsure as to how they will fare, and leave with beaming smiles, newfound self-confidence, and the start of some great new camp friendships. It’s a lot like what members of our community experience during their first summer with us in NH!
We can’t wait to see so many of our new families this weekend at the NJ Rock Gym in Fairfield, NJ. If history is any indicator most of the campers in attendance will, themselves, someday be greeting future Kenwood and Evergreen campers at a new camper party!
