Creative Ideas at CampJuly 26, 2013
We are always looking for new and creative ideas at camp. While we have many sources, one of our best is Bob, our Kenwood Athletic Director. Bob’s a great coach, but he’s also one of the most innovative people on our leadership team. As an example, Hollowpallooza was his idea. About 15 years ago in a meeting he leaned over and said “you know, we obviously have tournaments for our kids playing sports but what about our kids who are super passionate about music? What if we had a concert in the Hollow? We could call it Hollowpallooza!”
Last year Bob had another winning idea with his 3D Archery course and tournament. Bob found a set of foam rubber statues, including a dinosaur, a massive mosquito, a poisonous frog, and others, and laid out a path at the back of our Ropes Course parking lot. Campers came in with quivers of arrows and had a chance to try their hand at shooting different sized targets in different conditions and terrains. As you can imagine, it was an immediate success.
Today was the 2nd annual Kenwood & Evergreen 3D Archery Tournament. Almost 50 campers from around New England spent the day here. They all took turns on the course, and afterwards had a BBQ that Bob put together. And when all of the points were totaled up the grand prize went to our Evergreen Archers, who out shot second place by almost 100 points! Cha-hee, cha-haw to our girls, and especially to Bob! We love new ideas at Camp!
Today was also Deli Day, maybe the most popular lunch of the week. Everyone sat outside and had a massive picnic together. The weather was gorgeous and we all loved the chance to sit and gab and just enjoy being together. During the meal the entire Camp was treated to an impromptu jam by a couple of campers and counselors in the Theater. I shot a little video of it if you’d like to hear what this talented little band put together with absolutely no practice!
Tonight in Kenwood the evening activity was Counselor Hunt. We have tried to have this event for the past month, but each time it was rescheduled something had to go in its place. So when it actually happened tonight our boys were INCREDIBLY excited, as were their counselors. Who doesn’t love a game of Hide and Go Seek with 200 people?!
In Evergreen the girls all headed to the tent for something called “Mess Ugly” night. The object of Mess Ugly is for campers to make their counselors look as ridiculous as possible, and have as much fun doing it as possible. It ends up being a silly, creative, goofy, hysterical night where everyone loses all self-consciousness. What a great message for our girls! As you can see from some of these pictures our campers and counselors got WAY into this, and a great time was had by all.
Afterwards Deena and Courtney decided to spend some quality time with the Evergreen 1st Year Seniors and took them out for some pizza and ice cream. All-in-all, it was a pretty great day at Camp.
As the sun set tonight we were treated to a sky filled a gorgeous blend of lapis lazuli and safron. Our seniors headed to the tent for one of their last rehearsals before their big production this Saturday. Their wonderful singing flowed from the center of Camp to all four corners of the campus. What a wonderful way to end the day.
