A key ingredient in the growth of our campers is our incredible
group of bunk and specialty counselors. Our bunk counselors have
no other job than to care for their campers and assist our
specialists during activities. They are often former campers,
and representing more than half of our staff of 160, almost
every one of our bunk counselors has grown up in Camp and
understands the values of our community.
Our specialists, who live with other specialists in staff housing,
are hired for their teaching expertise—for their ability to find
a way for every child to learn and grow. With the small size of
our bunk groups (6-7 campers per bunk with two counselors) and
the closeness of our bunk counselors to their children, our
counselors come to understand the individual needs of each of
their campers, and insure that their camp experience is shaped to meet those needs.
Our success in meeting the needs of each of our campers is
reflected in our unusually high camper return rate. Each year,
well over 90% of our eligible campers return to Kenwood &
Evergreen. Indeed, the power of the camp experience is not lost
on our counselors, as our staff return rate consistently exceeds 80%.
Camps Kenwood & Evergreen is dedicated to the continuing education
of its entire staff, from Junior Counselors to our Camp Administrators.
Throughout the winter months we participate in a variety of child
development, camping, staffing, and safety seminars and conferences.
Our Staff take part in a comprehensive training process that extends
throughout their summer. This includes Leadership Week, Specialists
Training Week, Staff Orientation, and our weekly Staff Meetings.
