With November having just begun, and the comforting chill of autumn in the air, summer should seem like a distant memory. And yet, I find myself thinking about the summer of 2006 almost every day. I think about our wonderful time together, and the incredible things that all of you accomplished. I think about the self-confidence that all of you brought back with you from Camp. I hope that all that you learned about yourself last summer at Camp has helped to make the start of your school year even better. Your parents noticed it, you know...so did your friends...the way you seem to be more comfortable with yourself...how much easier it is to make friends and try new things. Those are the gifts of Camp that you really only notice when you’ve returned home, and they are as important as the friends that you made and the fun that you had at Camp last summer. It is what you take home with you that is the true magic of Camp...

Since the end of the 2006 Camp season, we’ve been very busy, as always. Pete and his crew have been hard at work since you left. Our big project this year is the complete renovation and expansion of Cedar Lodge in Evergreen, which will be the new home to our 2007 Evergreen Freshmen! We’ve converted the old Cedar living room into an additional bunk room, and are constructing a brand new living room across the back of the entire lodge. It will overlook Eagle Pond, and will provide enough space for our record setting Evergreen Freshmen unit to be together in one place. The bathrooms will also be totally renovated, as will the other bunk rooms, including the floors. That’s not our only project, but it’s a big one!

Here at the Camp Office, everyone has been hard at work. Right now, over 60 new campers have enrolled for next summer, and with our always huge number of returning campers, almost every space in Camp has been filled. We’ve got a few places here and there, but I guess the word is out about Kenwood & Evergreen! Jason and Deena have been visiting many of our new Camp families this fall, and have been doing a great job sharing what Kenwood & Evergreen are all about. Jason has also just finished the 2007 Camp Calendar, which is in the mail on the way to you right now!

Dane has been organizing our Senior Winter Weekend, which has moved to Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend this year in order to give us an extra day up at Camp! I can’t wait to see our Seniors sledding down the Hollow, playing broomball on the frozen pond, and skiing or snow-tubing down Ragged Mountain. Dane is also organizing our Summer of 2006 reunions (click here for info) and I hope to see all of our 2006 Campers & Staff at one or both of the reunions! For our new campers, we’ve got special events just for you...our 2007 New Camper Parties! The NY/NJ/CT Area New Camper Party will be on Sunday, April 29 and the Boston Area New Camper Party will be on Sunday, May 6. We look forward to seeing all of our new campers at one or both of those great parties.

I also wanted to let you know that our Summer 2006 Camper Survey is now available for you to fill out online. When you have the chance, please take a few minutes to fill out the survey by clicking on this link. Filling out the survey takes only a few minutes, but gives us incredibly important information about how to make Camp the very best place it can be for you!

Finally, just a quick update on the adoption of my son, AJ. While I had hoped that he would be here by now, sometimes things don’t move as quickly as we would like them to move. I am hoping that AJ will be here by the end of December, and am doing my best to be patient. At least I know that he is in a wonderful foster home, and is getting the love and attention that he needs. I promise to let you know the minute that he arrives.

Love,

We want to send out a very special welcome to these newest members of our Camp family!

Greetings to all Kenwood/Evergreen campers and staff,

By now you must be well adjusted to life other than camp! I hope you had a great beginning to the school year and are making the most of your studies and extra curricular activities. It was difficult as always to adjust to the "Quiet" once I got home. I guess we don't realize how much collective noise we make when we're having so much fun.

I found it reassuring to be with my four adorable grandchildren who also love to make noise. The definite focus for my family and I during the last month or so was the preparation for our 5th annual "Mickey' Kids" golf tournament. Many of our board members were concerned that being the 5th year of the event, we might not have the participation we had in the past. Well, you'll be happy to know, that this year's tournament was actually our biggest turnout ever. We, in fact, were overbooked for golfers, and had many guests just come for dinner. It was truly a remarkable success!! It seemed that everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather, loved the opportunity to collectively remember Mickey and of course, be thrilled to support our wonderful scholarship to camp program. Many camp people were there either playing golf or helping to organize the day. In fact, Jesse Rosenberg and her Mom stopped by to say hello after her sports program at school. I am sure that with the success of this tournament we will be able to offer the fantastic "Camp" experience to many.

It is hard to believe that the leaves are fast turning their gorgeous colors and that Fall is here. We have lots of plans for the reunions, and winter weekend. Make sure you all come to as many of these events as possible. I miss you all so much, but I sure have fantastic memories from last summer to keep me going. Wishing everyone a fabulous Fall.

So much love,

Phyllis

P.S. Rick sends his best to everyone!

Greetings from the Jason, Deena & Winston!

This has been a very busy fall for us, recruiting lots of new campers and seeing so many of our Camp friends. In the last three weeks we’ve visited new campers and their families in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Wait until you meet all of these great new campers!

We’ve also been lucky enough to have the time to stop by a couple of current Camp families. In September we dropped by the Greenspuns in Westport, CT while the Chodocks were over for a visit. We visited the Stromfelds in their temporary house while they wait for the renovations on their house in Irvington to be finished. We’ve also seen Dan Humphrey and his family, Ben Schneider and his folks, the Franks, and the whole Bienstock clan. We’ll let you know if we’re ever coming to your town. We’d love to stop by, even just to give you a quick hug!

We were thrilled to get a call from Hut 6 1991 member Gordon Novod a couple of weeks ago. Gordon and his long-time girlfriend Claudia had gotten engaged the night before. The wedding is tentatively scheduled for sometime in October. Congrats to you both! We also got an email from Doryn Gelb, who had a mini-Reunion in London with some of her Juniper '92 friends, including Belinda Kay, Jess Goldstein and Becca Gordon. Click on this link to see a picture from their gathering. If you have gotten together with your Camp friends of any era please let us know so that we can mention it in an upcoming issue of the Scroll-Log.

Onto the most important news: Deena has not had her baby yet. The doctors are telling us that the due date is December 11th, but we know it could really be any day now. Mom and the baby are happy and healthy, and Winston the Dog is enjoying his last days as the entire focus of our lives. We promise to let everybody know when the baby is born. We’ve set up a website for everyone to see all of the pictures that we take. Visit us at www.thesebells.com. Right now we’ve just got some funny pictures of Winston on there.

Well, that’s about it. We hope that you all have a great time with Halloween and Thanksgiving, and the coming of Winter. We look forward to seeing you all at the Reunions and Winter Weekend. As always, please keep in touch, and feel free to write us with any questions or ideas you have about Camp.

Love,

Believe it or not, Camp is very busy for about three weeks after you all leave on that much-too-early Saturday morning in August. Every year I stay at Camp along with Chef Anne, Shirley (Housekeeping), Pete and his crew and a handful of counselors (and Dave Walsh this year). We all work together to clean up Camp and host educational groups, college orientation programs, football camps and team building events.

Of particular interest this year we hosted Camp Interfaith (Camp IF), a wonderful cultural/educational program. Camp IF came to us through Andy Tarsy, a Camp alum and old friend of Scott, and it was a HUGE success! Our counselors shared some of our Camp traditions and activities with the group to give them an exciting and rewarding Kenwood & Evergreen experience. Together we led an opening night campfire, an Apache Relay, Rope Burning and taught the number one Camp song: Taps. We are looking forward to welcoming Camp IF here again next year.

After Camp ends it is also a time for our domestic staff to head back to work or school, while our international staff often travels the world on their way back home. Once home, our staff gather whenever possible to keep the Camp community alive. Don’t forget that you can also stay in touch through the Bulletin Board on our website (www.kenwood-evergreen.com). Once you are on the Bulletin board you can even access both the Camper and Staff Directories if you would like to contact someone directly.

As soon as I returned to the Camp winter office in Sharon, MA, I started to get excited about the Mickey’s Kids golf tournament fundraiser. I don’t really play golf but I try my best for one day every year. What a wonderful day it was! Playing golf is the most fun while mixing with Camp friends, Mickey’s friends and Alumni to raise money for an invaluable cause: sending children to Camp.

Back to the Camp office, we have been receiving some wonderful staff applications from our Hut 6 and Juniper of 2005! Our Junior Counselors are the future leaders of Camp and everyone in the Camp administration is excited to see how our campers will perform as JCs this coming summer. In the next Scroll Log we will be announcing our new group of Junior Counselors!

I am in the process of planning our upcoming (Boston & NY/NJ/CT) Reunions and Winter Weekend. The Winter Weekend is going to be a special one this year, as it will be a whole day longer than usual (it falls on Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend)! That means more sledding, more broomball, more skiing, more hot chocolate and more fun! This event is open to campers who will be seniors in 2007 and is amazingly popular; filling up in the first two days! Don’t worry, Junior campers, soon enough you will have three chances to attend Winter Weekend. In the meantime, we will see you at the Reunions. I’ll be the one playing soccer and handing out the pizza!

Take care,

This Issue's Contest:

This an idea submitted by Dane Pickles and Scott Brody: name the Color War Head Coaches for Kenwood or Evergreen from 2000 to 2006 (boys only have to list the coaches for Kenwood; girls only have to list the coaches for Evergreen). Once again, there is also a special bonus question with this edition of the Scroll-Log: Can you name the coaches from the other camp for the same years? The first Kenwood and Evergreen campers to correctly email the completed puzzle to us will receive Kenwood or Evergreen felt pennants to hang in their bedrooms. The first camper to mail or email us the correct answer to both questions will also win a Staff t-shirt.

******************** Last Issue's Question************************

Once again, we had MANY people respond to the trivia question in the last issue of the Scroll-Log. Congratulations to 2006 Hut 6 member Brian Sokolow who was the only person in the Camp community who could correctly list the names and order of Senior musicals from 1998 to 2005!

Hello...I'm back to report on some alumni news:

I was happy to be a part of Mickey's Kids 5th annual golf tournament back on Sept. 25th. It was the biggest turnout and most successful event so far and I was thrilled to see many alumni. Some in attendance were Andy Tarsy, Alan Popkin, Gary and Greg Saks, Stacey Wish Silverstein, Lisa Halpert, Jackie and Todd Finard, Ali Drourr, Eric Carniol, Em Zylber, David Weiner, and Bill Baron. Of course from the permanent Camp crew there were the Mitchells, Sebells, Danks, Arthur and Judy Sharenow, Scott, Catherine, Dane...I know I'm leaving out some, please forgive me.

Since the summer two future Evergreen girls were born...Congratulations to Evan and Jodi Gordon on the birth of their daughter Alexandra! Congrats also to Emily Luskin Schonbraun and her husband Mike who also had a baby girl named Alexa Harley. Jason and Deena are mighty close to their due date as well!

We just got together for a nice night out with Adam Satin, who is receiving many accolades as a top lawyer in Boston. In attendance were Gary Saks and his amazing wife Stacey, newlywed Keith Garte and his wife Julie and all the way in from NYC, Brookie "Cookie" Gilbert Starr...had to say it Brooke!

My brother, Sam, and I were fortunate enough to visit the set of Evergreen alumna Sarah Silverman's new show for Comedy Central, due to air sometime this late winter. Her sister, Laura, also an actress/comic gave us the tour of the studio and of course I couldn't go to the set empty handed. So what did I bring to the hilarious Evergreen Alums you ask? A jar of PC's mustard. I hope they know that's worth gold.

In other alumni news...We are having our annual Boston Alumni Family Gathering at the Leventhal-Sidman JCC the day after Thanksgiving. If for some reason you did not get an Evite from me, please let me know...We would love to have you and your children there. New York/New Jersey/CT area families, don't you fret-- We are planning a Family Get-Together for you all, too! We're looking at the last weekend in April and we hope to have Sue Sharenow Krevlin's husband, Michael, help out with the fun-filled activities. More news on that event in the next issue of the Scroll-Log.

SAVE THE DATE: The Camp Alumni Weekend is set for Labor Day Weekend 2007. Mark it in your calendars! We are already planning some amazing events for you and your families.

Sorry about the poll or lack of one that I promised on the last issue of the Scroll-Log. I will get to it and look forward to hearing from any of you in the meantime. If you have any questions and or comments, I welcome them at any time. Please feel free to contact me at Liz@kenwood-evergreen.com.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

Best wishes,

Liz Mettler Coyle
