Scroll-Log, December 2005 edition

It’s been two weeks since the Boston reunion, and I still have a smile on my face! Over 70 campers and 30 counselors spent an incredible evening together and even got to see the debut of Zylbie’s “Summer of 2005 Video Yearbook”. I know that at good time was had by all, and can’t wait until our NY area reunion in January.

What amazes me most about our Camp reunions is that they prove something that a wise Camp Director once said to me many years ago, “Camp isn’t about a particular place. It’s about something much bigger.” As we have all come to learn, Camp is about people—the friendships we form and the way that we feel about each other and about ourselves. Whenever I walk around a Camp Reunion—once it’s been going for about an hour—I get the same feeling that I have every day walking around Camp during the summer. It is amazing how strong our Camp friendships are, and how easy it is to pick up where we left off with our Camp friends. As busy as all of us are in our “school-year” lives, and as much as we care for our friends from home, there is something about a Camp friendship that is really different, and very special.

I suspect that our Camp friendships are so meaningful because they are forged in a special way. At Camp, we live a whole year of friendship together in just seven weeks. We spend almost all of our time together, living through the highs and lows of bunk life and helping each other along the way. Our Camp friends know our little secrets and deepest wishes—they know what makes us happy, our strengths, our challenges, and everything in between. When you know so much about somebody, and spend so much time together, you form the kind of friendship that doesn’t just disappear when you don’t see each other for a few months.

Even now, many of my closest friends are those that I made at Kenwood & Evergreen when I was a camper and counselor. I know my Camp friends will always be there for me—they have my back, and I will always have theirs. That’s a pretty amazing gift that Camp has given to me, and I am confident that when you are my age, you will say the same thing. There is nothing better than the love of friends and family.

In the meantime, please remember that we love you, and can’t wait to see you at Winter Weekend, at the NY area reunion, and back on the shores of Eagle Pond when the summer of 2006 begins.

We want to send out a very special welcome to these newest members of our Camp family!

Hi everyone,

We just had our first Camp reunion of the 2005 season, and I guess its when I see all the terrific campers, counselors and parents, that I realize how special our camp family really is. We had a terrific turn out, and it looks like we will indeed have a huge group of returnees for this coming season. The new camp video was a major success which was very evident from the screams of laughter and delight as everyone saw themselves and their friends on the screen. It brought back such great memories of crazy special event weekends or exciting activities , especially those from Green and Gold, and Maroon and Grey. Lots of the campers used the pool to enjoy swimming together, but the chlorine sure made us know it wasn't Eagle Pond! Of course there was yummy pizza and drinks for everyone, and we all agreed it was over too quickly. We will now look forward to seeing some of you at Winter Weekend at camp. . .let's hope for lots of snow, and the New York reunion which is only about a month away.

Many of us were very busy shortly after camp gearing up for our fourth annual "Mickey's Kids" Golf Tournament. We were so lucky with a perfect weather day, and the event was once again a major success. Hopefully, we will be able to add some new Mickey's Kids to our camper roster this coming summer.

On a personal note, I have been very busy enjoying my four gorgeous grandchildren. The two oldest, Harper and Tyler, love when we sing some of the Nancy Tucker songs. I think they will be well prepared in a few years when they can actually be campers.

I want to wish our whole camp family a Happy, and Healthy New Year. Enjoy the holidays!

With much love,

Phyllis

Greetings from the Jason, Deena & Winston!

This has been a very busy fall for us, recruiting lots of new campers and seeing lots of Camp friends. We had so much fun seeing all of the campers, parents and staff at the Boston Reunion last weekend. Thanks to everyone who came out that night, especially those who made the long journey from NY to hang out with their camp friends.

Jason has been working on learning some new tricks to update the Camp website. As an example, click on this link to see the new slideshow we put together after the Boston Camp Reunion. You can navigate from photo to photo by clicking on the large arrows at the bottom of the page. Please send us an email with your feedback on this new format.

As part of the renovations to the website we are working on a Media Center section on the website that we expect to have up sometime in February. The Media Center will be the hub for all sorts of fun and dynamic content, including games, animated slideshows of photos, Hollowpallooza music from this summer, streaming video clips and much, much more. We’ll let you know as soon as the Media Center is online and working.

We want to thank all of the people who responded to our call in the last Scroll-Log for photos from recent gatherings with Camp friends. Click on the link to the Friends Gathering Slideshow to see what people have to been doing this fall and winter. And if you have a photo that you’d like to show in the next Scroll-Log please email us.

We wish you all a wonderful Holiday season and hope to see you all at either the Winter Weekend or NY/NJ/CT Reunion.

Love,

Jason, Deena & Winston

I am fortunate to have the wonderful job of staying in touch with our staff during the off-season. Currently, I am reaching out to all of our staff all over the world, including Canada, Australia, Israel and Great Britain, to find out who will be able to return next summer. Early signs are very encouraging but it is still a little too early to confirm who our returning international staff will be. What I can confirm is our exciting new group of Junior Counselors (from our Class of 2004)! For Kenwood we have: Nate Adler, Mark Daniels, Peter Glaser, David Krantz, Ross Palley, Matt Lipkins, David Messinger, Nicky Offenberg, Will Roth, Morgan Salvan, Sam Trachtman and Ben Weiner. Returning for Evergreen are: Marly Brown, Sarah Foran-Schmidt, Lilly Smith, Tracy Sweetbaum and Arielle Wisotsky. We are all very happy to have them return to Camp as staff members and expect great things of them.

On the horizon I have other exciting projects: in the spring I will be traveling to England and Poland to meet up with old staff and recruit some more amazing international staff. In the more immediate future, I have been planning our Boston and NY/NJ/CT Area Reunions plus our 6th Annual Winter Weekend. I hope to see you all soon, either in Boston or New York for a game of soccer, or up at Camp for a game of broomball on the ice at Eagle Pond!

Take Care,
Dane

I don’t know how many of you have thought about it, but your summer home is where I live all year long. The change that takes place when you all are away is nothing short of surreal.

During the last week of Camp, everyone is back from various trips for Color War. Every inch of Camp vibrates with shouts of encouragement. Never is Camp louder than when a single song or cheer could mean the difference between a glorious victory or defeat. A quick four days later, you put your clothes and memories in a duffle bag, and the buses take you to your other homes. Here at Camp, a sweeping silence settles over Eagle Pond and my winter life begins.

The fields are empty, the bunks are empty, even the lake is still. The wildlife starts to poke its head out of the woods to see if you are really gone. During my walk to work in the morning, a pair of loons swims and dives on the water. We counted fifteen ducks, a dozen geese, and a cormorant sharing our little pond before they all flew to a warmer winter home. In the evenings, it is not uncommon to see a beaver gliding lazily across the water. A Bald Eagle graced us with his presence, and we had the opportunity to see him twice, perched high in a tree over the lake’s inlet. The temperature has dropped, the ice is forming, and snow has blanketed the Camp. If you look closely, you can see deer tracks crisscross the Camp. Even a set of moose tracks lead down from the rock climbing area and up through Senior Hill.

Walking through Camp, I pass by Oak Lodge. Memories of summer flood back to me - the porch, full of baseball mitts, shoes, and beach towels; every chair occupied by the boys; Mintzer shouting for someone to find Harvey; I see faces - Jeremy, Zach, DJ, Tourner, and Ethan. There is an echo of their laugher now. Now the porch sits empty, piled high with snow, and even the chairs have gone to their winter home. Walking through Evergreen, a memory of Courtney leaping off the steps to show off her new dance move comes to mind. Even Jackie’s laugh never really leaves Camp, and I think I see a flash of Tamar’s blonde hair from the porch of the Office, now, also deep in snow.

Today the snow is falling hard and piling up fast outside my window. We are supposed to get a foot of snow on top of the eight inches we got on Thanksgiving Day. It makes me want to play with some of the toys I have gathered for Winter Weekend.

Getting ready for Winter Weekend is a lot of work. The wood boxes have been filled so we can have big, warm fires to sit around. Couches have been brought into the Dining Hall and put in front of the fireplace. The Staff porch has been turned into a game room, and let me tell you - I thought the foosball table was heavy. Try carrying the ping pong table up the stairs! Shirley has sacrificed twenty or thirty brooms from Housekeeping so we can play broom ball. As I collected the tip-ups for ice fishing, I tried to remember just where Matt caught that really big pickerel last year.

Camp is still Camp, however, even when we’re busy with work, there is always time for fun. Bill and I took out all the sleds and tried a few runs just to make sure they still worked (they do!). While filling Oak Lodge with beds for the weekend, Shirley and I had a snow ball fight because I wanted to make sure the snow still worked as well as last year (It does!). Did you know we have an igloo building tool? I have started several igloos with my friends’ kids but never finished one. Tonight, I think I will turn on the lights in the Hollow and have some friends over to start building one. If I don’t finish by Winter Weekend, I will personally make hot s’mores for anyone who helps me complete it.

While winter puts a different face on Camp, and the games we play here change with the seasons, the hugs and laughs are the same warm ones we look forward to all year. I’m looking forward to hearing laughter coming from Oak, the piles of snow boots on the porch, and seeing all of the footprints running up the hollow for the next slide down.

See you on Jan 6th.
